    Each consultation includes a breathing and postural assessment and guidance to positively change your breathing right on the spot. See the results and discover your power to feel better. The Buteyko Breathing Method is a series of breathing exercises that restore normal breathing patterns, which help to maintain the correct ratio of oxygen and carbon dioxide within the bloodstream.

The Buteyko Method was developed by Russian physician Konstantin Buteyko, who as a medical student in the 1940s made an observation that has changed the management and lifestyle of thousands of people with asthma, sleep apnea, snoring, allergies, hay-fever, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, sinusitis, high blood pressure, panic attacks and other breathing disorders.

According to his research, some 150 diseases are linked to dysfunctional breathing.

Dr. Buteyko noticed that the condition of patients in the acute respiratory ward deteriorated when their breathing rate increased. He also noticed that those who reduced or normalised their breathing rate began to recover. This fact had been noted long before, and is based on a physiological phenomenon described by Dr. Christian Bohr in 1904 (the “Bohr Effect”) essentially, the more you breathe, the less oxygen is available to your tissues.

For more than thirty years Dr. Buteyko researched dysfunctional breathing and hyperventilation and the effect it has on the human body. His research and application of these observations allowed him to develop the breathing techniques that today bear his name.

Dysfunctional Breathing

People with respiratory or sleep disorders, fatigue or general breathlessness, overbreath, 2-3 times more than normal. Often poor breathing occur unconsciously, resulting in irritation, inflammation and constriction of smooth muscles in airways, bloodstreams or GI tract.

The Training

Our program has been developed over the last decade by Chris Bauman and Roger Price to address problems caused by dysfunctional breathing and posture which typically develop due to the 21st century lifestyle.  It is primarily an education program taught by a well-trained The Rock Spa practitioner. It is appropriate for adults and children.

The Breathing Well Program follows a specific assessment and it is always done under the guidance of an appropriately trained health practitioner (Ortho-Postural Trainer). Your health practitioner will provide you with a Workbook Code so that you can gain access to the additional content and downloads on this website.

The Breath Well Program, based on the Buteyko Method, is about tapping into our natural ability to heal ourselves. Classes are small with ample personal attention. The exercises are gentle and require no special clothing or tools.

  • We provide support for one year after the course with private appointments to see how you are improving, any troubleshooting, answering questions, and discussion as to how further improve.

How The Breath Well Program Links With Dentistry And Orthodontics

There is a paradigm shift happening in the world of Early Intervention Orthodontics [EIO] as well as Dental Sleep Medicine [DSM].

This has come about as a result of mounting evidence that the current methods of treating crooked teeth, crowded mouths and sleep disorders are simply not working effectively, and the relapse and non-compliance rates are simply unsustainable.

The reason is quite simple.  Current orthodontic and sleep treatments are focused on the problem – not the cause – and the treatments on offer are frequently only band-aid solutions – usually ending up in relapse as a consequence of the patient not being able to comply.

  • In 2003 – 04, a 6-month trial in Calgary, Alberta showed that “Asthmatic Buteyko subjects improved asthma control to 75% from 41%. 21% eliminated steroid use”
